There are two major applications for spy cameras: investigation and surveillance. Unless you are a professional or have some special reason to carry out an investigation, surveillance is the reason why you would want to look at spy cameras. Closed-circuit TVs keeping a watch over the visitors to a large store is a familiar sight to all of us and is one of the most common and visible examples of surveillance. Surveillance is a hotly debated topic, and it is a double-edged weapon, because it can invade the privacy of anyone. Surveillance can be overt, as in the case of large stores, or covert, when done using hidden cameras. The positive side is that surveillance can help you in a number of ways. Home security systems that watch over children and visitors and nanny cams are some of the examples of the positive uses of surveillance. Theres a caveat, though. Surveillance systems can be set up illegally to invade your privacy. There are even companies that offer equipment that will help you discover hidden cameras in your home. Surveillance can be done through video cameras hooked to a recording device and a monitor/TV/PC. In addition, you can have a motion detector that senses any motion or change and automatically captures the image. Surveillance systems can be set up to automatically set off alarms or to send emails to you. This way, you are more secure in the knowledge that should anything go wrong, you will know about it immediately. You can also access the surveillance footage through the Internet. The cost of surveillance systems can vary quite a lot. At one end of the spectrum, you can assemble your own surveillance system with standard items like a webcam, PC, and some software. There are also a number of DIY suppliers, who will help you assemble your own surveillance system. Alternately, you can choose a professionally designed and assembled system, which would obviously involve a higher cost, but can give you much better benefits. With lowering costs, increasing dependence on third parties for home security, and rising crimes, spy camera surveillance could become a way of life in the not-too-distant future. |
