High Blood Pressure Treatments

Author: Josh Riverside

Most people often think that high blood pressure is a condition that only adults, 40 years old and above, experience. But actually, anyone can have high blood pressure, regardless of age, gender and race.

High blood pressure, which is the elevated pressure of the blood in the arteries, often result from two major factors: the heart pumping blood with excessive force and the narrowing of the body's smaller blood vessels that causes blood flow to exert more pressure against the vessel's walls. Although your body can tolerate increased blood pressure for months and even years, eventually the heart may enlarge, resulting in serious health problems. That is why it is important for your high blood pressure to be determined and treated as early as possible.

Lifestyle changes and medications are included in the list of high blood pressure treatments. Although there are drug treatments and are proved to be very important, it is still not clear when these should be taken and started. Still the more important thing for you to do is to have healthy lifestyle changes to control high blood pressure by lowering the intake of protein, sodium and alcohol and increasing potassium intake.

The DASH diet or Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension is said to be excellent for controlling high blood pressure. This diet includes foods that contain potassium, calcium, magnesium and electrolytes and is rich in important nutrients and fiber. And in order to reduce high blood pressure effectively, you should combine DASH with salt restriction. Salt restriction alone can provide you with benefits, but a combination of this two is best.

Other lifestyle changes that you should do and observe are intakes of supplements, drinking alcohol in moderation, quitting smoking, exercise, good sleeping habits and weight loss.

So, if you have high blood pressure or if you suspect that you have, it is imperative that you do and observe these healthy lifestyle changes as high blood pressure treatments for you.
